axis diplomat 2004 - Windows Printer Driver Recommendations

Last Reviewed: 05 November 2004

Products affected: axis diplomat 2004 (& any Windows application)

Description: Recommendations on Windows printer drivers for use with axis diplomat 2004.

Introduction: This document is intended as a reference to indicate the preferred Windows printer driver to use with axis diplomat 2004 especially where no specific driver is available for a printer model or where the driver is known to cause problems. Where a printer is not listed use the latest driver available (either that provided by the printer manufacturer or Microsoft as applicable).

General Rules: Because axis diplomat does not ask much of a dot matrix printer, the simpler the driver the better. A lot of the specific drivers for printers attempt to be too clever in terms of providing graphics capabilities for the printers and set page margins to handle this. These page margins stop AXIS from picking sensible draft fonts and lead to page length and width errors. It has been found that the basic drivers for Epson emulation printers (this includes Panasonic and some OKI printers) are the Epson FX-100 for 9 pin printers and the Epson L-750 for 24 pin printers. The list below documents tested combinations of printers and drivers.

Epson FX 80

The Oki ML 280 ships in three alternative factory fitted emulations. Use this driver for the Epson emulation model (hold in Line Feed whilst powered on for test print including emulation model details which should show "ML280 EPS E F/W").

Oki ML 280 Elite (IBM)

5.00

Microsoft Windows CD

The Oki ML 280 ships in three alternative factory fitted emulations. Use this driver for the IBM emulation model (hold in Line Feed whilst powered on for test print including emulation model details which should show "ML280 IBM E F/W"). Note: We recommend upgrading the printer with an Epson emulation EPROM since 8-bit characters are not printed correctly when using IBM emulation.

Oki

280
(Microline Emulation)

NONE

The Oki ML 280 ships in three alternative factory fitted emulations. No driver is available for the Microline emulation model (hold in Line Feed whilst powered on for test print including emulation model details which will show "ML280 STD E F/W") and the Windows 'Generic text' driver does not set required page lengths. We recommend you contact your printer supplier to purchase an upgrade to either Epson FX or IBM emulation firmware.

For optimal performance ensure that  "Print quality" on the "Document Properties", "Advanced" tab is set to draft. Note that the Oki 3321 must be manually configured for Epson emulation. The other emulation/driver combinations (IBM Proprinter III) do not provide NLQ / Draft configurability. The default TOF will also require amending using the printer setup. Refer to Oki manual for instructions.

For optimal performance ensure that  "Print quality" on the Device Options tab is set to draft.
Although a Panasonic KX-P2124 driver is available (and this driver includes a Draft / NLQ mode setting) we have been unable to obtain anything other than NLQ mode.
Neither of these Windows drivers appear to re-position the top line of the paper after a tear-off and so the paper must be manually adjusted between each print!

Under Windows 2000, set Print Quality to Draft Quality in the Document Defaults, Advanced button. Under Windows NT, set Print Quality to Draft Quality in the Document Defaults, Advanced Tab.

Although a Panasonic KX-P3626 driver is available  this driver appears to produce spurious margin settings which cause axis diplomat to print at 7.5 lines per inch (rather than 6) and then leave a gap of approximately 1.5" at the bottom of each page.
