Key Features
- New! Optimized data protection for Microsoft Windows
Server 2008—Certified media server support for
Windows Server 2008 provides fast, efficient backup and
recovery, including complete driver support for faster
backup performance, exclusive use of Volume Shadow
Copy Service (VSS) snapshots, and protection for failover
clustering. Plus, Symantec Backup Exec provides support
for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Core Server through
the Backup Exec Agent for Windows Systems, keeping
business-critical Windows data protected and helping to
ensure that it can be easily recovered.
- New! Backup Exec Agent for Enterprise Vault—
Integrated backup and recovery protection for Symantec
Enterprise Vault. Symantec Backup Exec now delivers
full application protection of Enterprise Vault, including
Directory Database, Partitions/Vault Stores, and Indexes,
plus users can efficiently recover individual partition files
and indexes quickly and easily through the Backup Exec
console.
- Enhanced! Granular recovery for Exchange and
continuous protection, including support for Exchange
2007—Granular Recovery Technology and continuous
protection eliminate the daily backup window for Exchange
backup jobs and enable recovery of individual mailboxes,
messages, and folders in seconds from a single backup.
Exchange “mailbox or MAPI” backups are no longer
required to restore granular Exchange data—so the
number of backups and time required to protect Exchange
is significantly lower. Plus, Granular Recovery Technology
enabled backups can now be easily stored to a remote or
removable disk drive or off to a storage area network (SAN)
to further optimize your backup and recovery strategy.
- Enhanced! Agent for Microsoft Active Directory—The
enhanced agent enables fast recovery of user accounts,
printers, organizational units (OUs), down to the individual
attribute level without Domain Controller reboots, and it
now supports granular recovery of Microsoft Server 2008
Active Directory Domain Services objects as well.
- New! Symantec Endpoint Protection integration—Now
Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 users can view up-tothe-
minute security threat reports through the Symantec
Backup Exec console, and they can set proactive backup
jobs to be automatically triggered to run based on a
Symantec ThreatCon Indicator level. Proactive ThreatCon
backups help ensure that an “uninfected” copy of
business data is backed up and can be recovered in the
event of a virus or malware attack.
- Enhanced! Agent for Windows Systems—This agent
now includes the Remote Agent for Windows Servers,
Continuous Data Protection, Advanced Open File
Option to protect open files, and the Intelligent Disaster
Recovery Option for basic, tape-based disaster recovery.
The agent expands Windows based data protection
and optimizes data transfers for 32- and 64-bit remote
Windows servers, including local registry and system
state information.
- Enhanced! Backup Exec for Windows Servers System
Recovery Option—The Symantec Backup Exec for
Windows System Recovery Option delivers advanced
disk-based system recovery that now supports Microsoft
Windows Server 2008. The Windows System Recovery
Option provides fast, easy-to-use system restoration or
full bare-metal recovery to dissimilar hardware and even
virtual environments for servers, desktops, or laptops,
allowing businesses and IT to recover from system loss or
disaster in minutes, not hours or days.
Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Option captures
a recovery point of the entire live Windows system—
including operating system, applications, system settings,
configurations, and files—without affecting productivity.
This recovery point can be conveniently saved to various
media or disk storage devices, including SAN, NAS, direct-
attached storage, RAID, and CD/DVD. When a system
fails, it can be quickly restored without the need for
manual, lengthy, and error-prone processes, helping IT
administrators meet recovery time objectives,
For simplified administration and centralized
management for larger organizations, as well as
enhanced Exchange and SharePoint protection, consider
using Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8 Server
Edition.
- Enhanced! NDMP Option (now supports IBM N series)—
The enhanced NDMP Option supports the backup and
restore of NDMP NetApp, EMC Celerra, and IBM N series
filers with tape devices attached. Support for NDMP
devices greatly expands the number of disk targets that
can be selected for disk-based data protection.
- Enhanced! Agent for Lotus Domino® (now supports
Lotus Domino)—The Agent for Lotus Domino integrates
comprehensive data protection of vital Lotus Domino 6.x,
7.x, and 8 messaging and collaboration databases within
daily backup activities. Backup and restore of partitioned
and clustered Lotus Domino servers are also supported.
Additional, flexible restore options include database
redirection and point-in-time “rollback” recovery of
databases or transaction logs.
- Enhanced! Agent for Mac® system (now supports
Macintosh® OS X 10.5)—This agent supports online non-
disruptive backup of Macintosh OS X 10.3,10.4, and 10.5
operating systems. This expanded Macintosh platform
support broadens the data protection offering for Backup
Exec customers and further ensures up-to-date backup
and recovery for heterogeneous platforms.
- Enhanced! Online Protection of Microsoft Virtual
Server 2005—Optimized support for Microsoft Virtual
Server 2005 provides fast, flexible virtual backup and
recovery support.
- New! LTO-4 tape drive support—Support is provided
for tape manufacturers’ new LTO-4 hardware encryption
functionality by managing the encryption keys through
the tape drive so that data can be quickly decrypted and
easily recovered to the Backup Exec media server. In
addition, Symantec Backup Exec 12 now supports the
latest LTO-3 and LTO-4 high-performance tape drives,
providing high-speed block size backups, enhancing
overall backup times.

options—Using the Backup Exec 12 console, it is now
easy to download and evaluate all the Symantec Backup
Exec agents and options in your current Symantec Backup
Exec 12 environment for 60 days, absolutely free. Then,
before the trialware period expires, simply purchase
and install the license keys for the agents or options you
want to extend permanently. No reinstallation or new
configuration is necessary.
- Desktop and Laptop Option—This option improves
efficiency by protecting only the changed elements (block
level) of files, as well as integrating end-user recovery with
the Continuous Protection Server. In addition, this option
enables a single restore point with Backup Exec Retrieve.
- Central Admin Server Option—Efficient 3-tier server
management simplifies and centralizes the management
and monitoring of multiple Backup Exec media servers
